Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her US tour following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry says farewell to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
