Are You Able to Solve This? The Forgotten Netherlands Creation That Forged our Modern Globe
One can find many contenders for the title of “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.
According to a new book, though, that honor belongs to the automated sawmill conceived by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to automated sawing, constructing a modest trading ship required around ten lumberjacks working for 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, an identical quantity of processed timber could be produced within a week.”
Owing to this speedy automated cutter, that converted timber to boards using almost no human effort, Dutch builders could construct vessels faster compared to any other nation, which unleashed a century of Netherlands maritime, financial and artistic supremacy in Europe and the globe.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Device
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues the writer, represented “mankind’s first authentic factory apparatus.” A windmill turned a wheel. One component transformed its circular motion into vertical motion for the cutting blade. Another component transformed the spinning motion into a sideway’s movement advancing the timber toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood forward one precise increment each stroke.
“Every component seemed simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to integrate them in order that the machine operated in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing with each downward motion and moving on every return stroke. It was a remarkably clever application of fundamental components.”
