New York Introduces Reporting Tool for Residents to Report ICE Videos After Detentions of Four US Citizens

The state AG has introduced a new digital platform asking citizens to provide visual evidence of ICE operations around the state. This step comes just a day after a major enforcement action shook Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering mass demonstrations.

US Citizens Detained In ICE Operation

A lawmaker disclosed during a news conference that four US citizens were taken into custody and detained for "almost a full day" after Tuesday's raid. Protests occurred in New York on consecutive evenings.

"All New York residents deserves to reside free from terror," the AG wrote in a statement.

"If you witnessed and recorded immigration enforcement recently, I encourage you to share that material with us. We are dedicated to examining these reports and evaluating any legal breaches."

Form Details

The form offers options to submit images and video footage of the operation, along with a field to specify geographic details. Prior to sending, submitters must tick a option that confirms that "the office could utilize any documents, photographs, or videos in a public document, including in a court case or official statement."

Information about the ICE Action

The Chinatown raid, which observers say featured more than 50 ICE personnel, took place in a popular district of NYC where counterfeit handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are sold daily widely – often to tourists.

Videos of the operation reveal multiple hooded and equipped personnel zip-tying and detaining a individual, and forcing aside onlookers. Masses of residents pursued the agents through the streets. An military-style transport was observed rolling through the city streets.

Official Reactions

During a midweek briefing featuring the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a Democratic representative, announced that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be detained for unjustly." He clarified the citizens were let go on Wednesday with no legal action taken.

"There's a clear purpose here. It is not to take criminals off the street," he stated. "This represents a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is merely a excuse to incite violence for the government to deploy the military to halt conflict that they have created."

Extensive Outcry

Outrage over the federal action quickly spread – all three mayoral candidates denounced the operation, along with the state leader.

"Once again, the federal government selects authoritarian theatrics that create fear, instead of protection. It must stop," a contender declared.

The city's advocacy organizations spoke out as well.

"ICE targeted Chinatown in NYC with tactical trucks, hooded officers and tactical gear to go after small merchants working to survive. This raid had no relation to public safety and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and neighborhoods," said the leader of a rights organization.

ICE Policies

Agency rules forbids the holding of citizens and the bureau has said it does not take into custody US citizens. However, external research has found that over 170 American nationals have been held against their will by federal agents since the start of the present government.

Current Situation

ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in the state and across the US this year.

A recent action in the city center was the earliest reported action on an housing center of the existing leadership. Rallies targeting immigration enforcement are ubiquitous including allegations of aggression and inhumane treatment.

Most recently, a submission filed by advocacy organizations alleged healthcare failures of pregnant women in ICE facilities.
