New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD shared video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in March.
