In a recent appearance, star Jude Law stated he had no concerns about backlash for portraying the Russian leader in a cinematic adaptation. This production, though, may align so closely with the mythologized version circulated by Russian state media that, domestically, it functions as a compliment rather than a critique.

The Manufactured Superhero

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have worked together to forge a tailor-made persona of Putin. This character is a political superhero devoid of flaws, a former spy reimagined as a Russian James Bond who always knows more than he reveals.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a TV series released last October, directed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a fictional security officer inexplicably chosen to “rescue” the nation from chaos. While he is called a different name, the message is unmistakable: the savior must be a known figure from the secret services.

International depictions often end up reinforcing this identical story instead of undercutting it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to undermine the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a symptom, moving the focus to the political machinery around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, the president is shown as having been picked by influential figures to stabilise the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the shadows, desiring permanent power.

This tale is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. In reality, these events ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody ever begged Putin to accept the role. The presidency was in essence a casting call with many candidates. At the centre to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the country in practice.

Interestingly, the shift to depicting him as a “spy” could partly have been triggered by the actor's debut as 007. The grittier interpretation prompted Russian media and online audiences to draw visual parallels with their leader. Mashup posters swapping Craig’s face with Putin’s surfaced on city centers, fueling the growing tendency to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

With Jude Law, an star well-liked by Russian audiences, the authorities are likely to seize the chance to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its exclusion of mass protests, the opposition, or prominent activists in the story, despite covering the past decade, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

Domestically, the president is often an omnipotent figure who remains unseen on screen. His influence is signaled through photographs or orders from on high. Now, he finally acquires a recognizable face—one that could unintentionally validate the exact legends it perhaps aims to question.
