The artist has handed over the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to protect the UK's small live music spots.

The star was given the prize on mid-October as his third album People Watching was chosen as the best record of the past year.

The musician has opted to give the cash to the MVT, in appreciation of the crucial part grassroots venues had in his beginning days.

"I personally wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the gigs I did around the area, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," said Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Beginning in 2023, over 150 of these spaces have shut down – about one-sixth of the total UK scene.

In the last year, major artists like the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by applying a modest fee to their ticket prices, which supports local stages.

He also joined in, collecting over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to help numerous grassroots venues across the UK.

The donation assisted locations that were facing imminent closure due to issues stemming from water damage, fires and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Some locations received funding support in modernizing amenities and gear that directly benefitted artists and concertgoers.

"The idea that money from concerts in large arenas backs the local stages, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just sensible," the star has stated.

Fender is far from the only musician to donate his honor winnings to worthy causes.

In the band won the trophy in the mid-90s for their release the album, frontman Cocker stated that the band would donate their winnings to the charity War Child.

In 2002, musician the artist split her award among a few charities, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I contributed a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they required better apparatus," Ms Dynamite shared with outlets.

Previously, they gave their prize money to the local youth club that supported their act, alongside other independent music bodies.

Additionally 1994 winners M People donated their winnings to a MS organization after a close contact was diagnosed the disease.

"Receiving the award was ample," stated vocalist the singer. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the honor. So our victory touched somebody else's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust shared it had rescued several grassroots venues in that region, by bringing them into local control.

One venue in the city and the other in Bristol were purchased under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is supported by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who buy "shares" in the venues.
