Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a major prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
