The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second release released by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
