During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying advice to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
