The Showrunner Discloses He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—the writers' room opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
One could easily to get swayed by the constant speculation and fan theories regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.
“It's like being force fed your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to discard a decent plan for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
