We are checking images and video posted this morning that show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were taken.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
