When Beachgoers Escaped Violence, Popular Image Depicts Lifeguard Running ‘All Out’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, describes the iconic coast as her own backyard. On a recent weekend evening, she, like many local residents, detected pops echoing across the community.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her residence, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display told her a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the avenue, talking to a duo who had hurried up the slope soaked, she noticed someone coming up behind her. The person was a rescuer, sprinting to Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. It was just him heading in the path that all the others was trying to get away from, carrying that big kit and unshod … He was sprinting into something that surely every fibre in your being would signal you to go in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully maximum effort running.”

A Symbol of Heroism Amidst Chaos

The photo Ching captured of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as a prime example of moments of valour in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, police and medical teams treating many those hurt.

Collective Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the patrol base next to the site of the attack transforming into a makeshift treatment center. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, including entering the water to rescue people needing help.

Following the events, messages of gratitude were shared. A social media message shared gratitude for the individuals who exhibited that “compassion will always triumph over darkness”.

The group of lifeguards issued a message, explaining they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful sentiments and support. We are touched by the care directed at our responders,” the organization stated. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it helps those impacted.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many full-time beach safety officers, said that the crew performed exceptionally from the second the incident started until late that nighttime.

“There have been so many powerful narratives, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” stated a local official.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous shores protected for visitors, but what we observed on Sunday should be highly praised.

“While we mourn and process the terror of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much positivity we have seen in the midst of such darkness.”
